With its laid back lifestyle, rich culture and the reputation for being one of the most beautiful countries in the world, it’s no surprise that New Zealand is one of the most popular travel destinations right now. And one of the incredibly popular and must-do activities for travelers to New Zealand is to take a 2 hour guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
What started off as a search for an area with a huge tree beside a lake that would be ideal for the Party Field, a LOTR location scout hit the jackpot when he flew over the twelve acre Alexander Family Farm, finding not only the perfect location for the Party Field, but for the whole of The Shire as well!

The only way to visit Hobbiton is on a tour, you can’t just wander in and walk through the site on your own, but trust us, it’s well worth it. You’ll learn many facts about Hobbiton and be treated to many tidbits from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies, and even if you’re the biggest LOTR fan around, there will still be things you’ll be surprised to learn. The tours depart every half an hour starting from 9:30am, and you can find more information about the tours and pricing here.

As you make your way through the tour, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the little details. There has been a lot of thought put into making the location as realistic as possible – letter boxes, fruits and vegetables on wheelbarrows in the garden, washing on the line, smoke blowing out from the chimneys etc., and the attention to detail is very much appreciated by visitors.

And of course, fans of the movie will definitely recognize the following picture as the path where Bilbo declares, “I’m going on an adventure!” from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. If you’re feeling up to it during the tour, you can definitely film your own version of that declaration.
“Hobbit: You! Mr. Bilbo where’re you off to?
Bilbo Baggins: I’m already late.
Hobbit: Late for what?
Bilbo Baggins: I’m going on an adventure!”
At the end of your tour, be sure to head to The Green Dragon Inn for your complimentary beverage from a selection of Ginger Beer, apple cider or ales. After which, be sure to hit up the Shire Store to get some memorabilia to commemorate your journey through the Middle Earth!
Hobbiton is located at 501 Buckland Rd, Hinuera, Matamata 3400, New Zealand
